Tips for Selecting a Closet Safe to Help Insure Valuable Items and Paperwork

As you work on closet organization, one thing may not note realize is important to organize is your papers. Valuable paperwork and sensitive documents should be carefully stored to protect them from damage as well as to keep them organized so that you can find them quickly when you need to find them. Many people fail to provide adequate storage for valuable items and paperwork and this will lead to a loss that is simply difficult to replace.

Organization of Valuable Items

Every home should have a safe. If your home does not, the investment into a closet safe can be one of the best investments that you make. There are various models to consider including in wall safes and lock box style safes. If you think you do not have anything to store in one, think again.

  • Store you passport and other identification materials in the safe. This includes you birth certificate, legal documents of your marriage or dissolution, and any type of identification you have for your children. This way, it is less likely to be in use to steal your identity.
  • Store your valuable jewelry in your closet safe. Although you may want to use a standard jewelry box, it can be risky to do so. Even with a home security system in place, these items should have further protection.
  • Store your insurance documents (including home, personal jewelry and auto insurance policies) in your closet safe. In particular, you want to keep an undated inventory of your possession alongside the insurance documents. That way, if there is a fire or flood that destroys your home, your insurance company has the documentation needed to replace your property.
  • Wills, trusts and banking documents should be kept in your safe.

As you can see, most families will have at least a few of these items and therefore it is important to have a closet safe to protect them.

Choosing the Right Safe

If you look at all of the options you have in closet safes, you may become overwhelmed. Which do you select? Here are a few tips to help you to make this decision.

  • Invest in fireproof safe. This important feature will help to protect your safe in situations where the home catches fire.
  • A waterproof safe is also important, for both fire situations and flooding. Not all fireproof safes are waterproof!
  • Select a safe that is difficult to break into. A combination may be a good option. Key safes are another option but if you lose the key, or do not store it properly, it could be difficult to have the safe opened.
  • The size of the safe is dependent on the items you will place into it. If you plan to place a significant amount of money into the safe, select a larger safe that has enough room for the storage.
  • Invest in quality. Purchase a safe only from a trusted manufacturer and be sure that the keying mechanism is unique. If it is a combination lock, be sure that you change the combination.

Selecting the best closet safe for your home is important. It is a step towards keeping your home organized and secure.
